Celebrate your NSVs!
The scale is an undeniable part of the weight loss surgery (WLS) journey. That thrill when the numbers drop is often what fuels the first several months. But if you’re a few months or even a few years out, you know that the scale slows down, sometimes plateaus, and occasionally even ticks up.
When this happens, it’s easy to lose motivation. That’s why every WLS patient needs to learn how to measure success not just in pounds lost, but in Non-Scale Victories (NSVs).
NSVs are the real, tangible proof that your hard work, your commitment to protein, and your dedication to moving your body are fundamentally changing your life for the better.
💖 The Power of Non-Scale Victories
NSVs are more than just feel-good moments; they are indicators of improved health, mobility, and quality of life. They are what will sustain you when the scale is stubbornly unmoving.
1. The Clothing Revolution 👖
This is the classic NSV, and for good reason. Nothing screams success like clothes that fit better—or, even better, clothes you can no longer wear because they’re too big!
- The “Smaller Size” Thrill: Buying a size down, or even just noticing that your favorite pair of jeans is suddenly baggy.
- Crossing Your Legs: Simple, but profound. Can you sit comfortably in a way you couldn’t before?
- The Seatbelt Test: Not needing a seatbelt extender on an airplane, or finding the seatbelt in your car has several inches of slack.
2. Functional Fitness & Mobility 💪
Your body is becoming more efficient, stronger, and more capable.
- The Stair Climb: Walking up a flight of stairs without getting winded or needing to stop halfway.
- The “Get Up” Test: Getting up from the floor, or a low chair, without using your hands for support.
- Active Play: Being able to chase your kids, grandkids, or even your dog for extended periods without joint pain or exhaustion.
- Improved Sleep: Snoring less (or not at all!), and waking up feeling rested.
3. Health & Medical Milestones 🩺
These are the most important victories, often validated by your doctor.
- Reducing or Eliminating Medications: Dropping the dosage for blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes medications (always in consultation with your medical team).
- Normal Bloodwork: Seeing your blood sugar, A1C, and cholesterol levels move into the healthy range.
- “No longer Obese” Classification: Your BMI shifting from one category to another is a massive health win.
💡 Your Action Plan: Finding Your Next NSV
The next time you feel discouraged, try this three-step process:
- List Your Wins: Grab a journal and write down at least five things you can do today that you couldn’t do before surgery. (e.g., I can tie my shoes standing up. I walked 3 miles today. I took a photo without hiding behind someone.)
- Set a Goal that Isn’t a Number: Instead of aiming to lose 5 pounds, aim for an NSV. (e.g., I will walk a 5K. or I will wear that shirt I’ve been saving.)
- Share the Joy! Post your victory in a WLS support group. You’ll inspire others, and the validation feels wonderful!
Remember: Your journey is about gaining life, not just losing weight. Celebrate the small victories, because they are the foundation of your big success.
